Riding home from the Phillip Island MotoGP towards Omeo: where to stop on Sunday night
No booking, a day at the Island behind you, and Omeo a long way off. Where the real beds are between Traralgon and Bruthen, how many kilometres each stop gets you, and how to decide how far to ride.
A rider heading home to northern New South Wales asked this on a MotoGP thread, and it is the right question: if I ride out on Sunday evening towards Omeo without booking anything, will there be a bed, and how far can I realistically go after a day at the Island?
We cannot see which rooms are free on 25 October, and nobody should pretend to. What we can do is lay out the road, the distances, and the real places to ask.
The 2026 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix runs 23 to 25 October. Everything below assumes you leave the circuit after Sunday’s race.
The distances that decide it
Measured along the route we have planned, from the circuit gate:
| Stop | Distance from the circuit |
|---|---|
| Traralgon | about 150 km |
| Sale | about 205 km |
| Bairnsdale | about 270 km |
| Bruthen | about 300 km |
| Omeo | about 390 km |
The whole thing is about five and a quarter hours of riding to Omeo, with no stops. Leave at 5pm and you are into dusk around Traralgon, and Omeo is not before 10:30pm once you have stopped for fuel. The last stretch is the Great Alpine Road from Bruthen, which is a mountain road and not one most riders want to meet for the first time after dark.
So the useful question is not “can I get to Omeo” but “where is the last place I would be glad to have stopped”.
Traralgon: the easy first night
About two hours from the circuit, and the first town with a proper spread of motels along or near the Princes Highway.
- Motel Traralgon, Princes Highway at Lodge Drive, 03 5174 2241.
- Black Bull Motel, listed with on-site parking.
- Connells Motel.
- Mantra Traralgon, the larger option in town.
If you are tired, tired is a perfectly good reason to stop here.
Sale: the sensible middle
About 205 km out, and the town with the most rooms on this stretch.
- The Matador Motel and Comfort Inn and Suites King Avenue are both listed with parking.
- The Criterion Hotel is a pub option in town.
- Maffra Motor Inn, a short ride north.
- Happy Days Accommodation at Tinamba near Maffra says it has parking for motorcycle groups, which matters if there are several of you.
Bairnsdale: the last big choice
About 270 km out, and the last town with real choice before the high country.
- Bairnsdale Motel, 42 Great Alpine Road, 03 5152 1933. Its listing shows free parking outside the room.
- Mitchell on Main Motel, Grand Terminus Hotel, Town Central Motel and Castle Motel.
- NRMA Bairnsdale Riverside Holiday Park if you want holiday-park prices rather than a motel.

Bruthen: one pub, phone only
About 300 km out. The Bruthen Inn Hotel, 84 Main Street, 03 5157 5201, advertises itself as a bike accommodating pub. It takes room bookings by phone only, so do not plan to turn up and find a screen to book on. Rooms are simple and some bathrooms are shared. It is a good place to be at 9pm, if you have rung.
Omeo: the far end
About 390 km out, and worth it if you have left early enough to arrive in daylight, or if you have rung ahead and know you have a bed.
- Golden Age Hotel, which says it welcomes bike clubs and large groups.
- Omeo Motel.
- Colonial Bank Motel, 159 Day Avenue, 03 5159 0700.
All three are small. A busy weekend can fill them.
How to decide, without booking anything
- Pick your latest acceptable arrival time before you leave the circuit.
- Count back: that is how many kilometres you can do. At the pace above, about 75 km an hour, including fuel.
- Ring two places in the stop that matches that distance and one in the town before it.
- Leave a bed in the town behind you as a fallback, not as a failure.
If the first call is a no, you have not lost an hour. You have learned that the whole region is busy and that the town before is the real answer.
Plan it in the app
We have set the route up in Motoridez as a single ride from the circuit to Omeo with each of those towns as a named stop and the venues in the notes, so you can drop the bits you do not need. A ride planned from the circuit also shows you what else is worth a stop nearby, such as lookouts and falls, if you are leaving early.
Listings were read on 8 October 2026. Rooms, prices and phone numbers change, and nothing here promises a bed. Ring before you ride.
Questions riders ask
Can I turn up without a booking on Sunday night?
You can try, but nothing we can see says you will get a bed. The 2026 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix runs 23 to 25 October, and a lot of riders leave on the same evening heading the same way. Ring two or three places while you are still at the circuit and keep a second town in mind.
How far is it sensible to ride after a day at the GP?
That is your call and depends on how your day went, but the geography gives you clean break points: Traralgon at about 150 km, Sale at about 205 km and Bairnsdale at about 270 km. Past Bairnsdale the next town with real choice is Omeo, and the road there is a mountain road.
Is there anywhere cheaper than a motel?
Bairnsdale has the NRMA Bairnsdale Riverside Holiday Park, and Bruthen Inn Hotel advertises simple pub rooms. Check the current price directly, because the figures that turn up in listings are often old.
Where in Omeo?
The Golden Age Hotel says it welcomes bike groups, and the Omeo Motel and Colonial Bank Motel are both on the main street. All three are small, so book before you commit to the run.
