Lone Star Rally 2026 ride plan: roads, routes and getting there on a motorcycle
Riding to the 2026 Lone Star Rally in Galveston, 5 to 8 November? Dates, the causeway and ferry, parking, early November weather and a group plan.
The 2026 Lone Star Rally runs from Thursday 5 November to Sunday 8 November in Galveston, Texas, and with less than two weeks to go, now is when the plan for getting there needs to be made. This is a ride plan for the rally: what it is, the two roads onto the island, where bikes can park, what early November weather usually looks like, and how a group can keep together on the way.
When is the Lone Star Rally 2026?
The official Lone Star Rally website lists Galveston, Texas, 5 to 8 November 2026. A separate event listing on motorcycles.news gives the same four days, Thursday to Sunday, with the Strand opening at 10:00am each day according to the rally’s FAQ.
The first thing to settle is which days you are riding. Thursday has the first concerts on the schedule. Sunday is the last day, and for many riders it is the ride home.
What is the Lone Star Rally?
It is a four-day motorcycle rally on Galveston Island. The official site lists bike and car shows, a rodeo games event, a tattoo contest, a sound competition, national and regional bands and “100’s of vendors”. The Cycle Source Ride In Custom Bike Show and a motorcycle show are on the events list too.
Attendance is not published on the rally’s own pages. The motorcycles.news listing puts it at roughly 400,000 visitors and more than 150,000 motorcycles a year, which is an estimate from a third party rather than an official count. Either way, plan for crowds.
What is the Lone Star Rally schedule?
The official band schedule says all concerts are free and uses two stages:
- Progressive Stage, Beach Central Park, 2102 Seawall Boulevard. Thursday 5 November runs from 2:00pm and ends with Gretchen Wilson at 9:00pm.
- Miller Lite Stage, Saengerfest Park, 2300 Strand.
The schedule continues through Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The band lineup and times can change, so read the official page the week you go. VIP passes are optional extras and are sold on the rally site.
How do you get to Galveston on a motorcycle?
Galveston is a barrier island, so the road options are short. Wikipedia describes the George and Cynthia Mitchell Memorial Causeway as the main roadway access to the island, carrying Interstate 45 north and south, with the Bolivar ferry as the second access point. The motorcycles.news listing also gives Interstate 45 and the Galveston Causeway as the route in, and puts Galveston about 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Houston.
That gives you two plans:
- Interstate 45 and the causeway. The direct route from Houston. Expect heavy traffic on rally weekends. We have no official traffic figures for the event, so build in slack rather than guessing a time.
- The ferry from Bolivar Peninsula. TxDOT’s Galveston to Port Bolivar ferry is free and runs 24 hours a day. Its Bolivar-side terminal is on State Highway 87 at Port Bolivar, so you can arrive from the east along the Gulf coast and cross the channel instead of detouring through Houston.
What to know about the Galveston ferry
From TxDOT’s page:
- One vessel runs through the night. A second goes into service at 6:30am, a third is added in the afternoon if needed, and up to five vessels may run in summer and holiday traffic.
- The crossing takes about 20 minutes, with about 10 minutes to unload and load, so a round trip is about an hour.
- In the high-traffic wait season waits can be two hours or more. TxDOT publishes a wait-time page and Port Bolivar webcams, so look before you commit.
- Vehicles are turned off once parked on the ferry, and TxDOT asks for the parking brake to be set. On a bike, follow the crew’s directions on how to park.
- Vehicles can be randomly selected for a federally required inspection. TxDOT says it takes a few minutes, and refusing it means being denied boarding for up to 24 hours.
- Service can be reduced or stopped for severe weather.
The ferry is a real option, not a trick. It is also the one place where a queue can swallow a morning, so decide in advance when you will turn back to the causeway.
Where do you park a motorcycle at the Lone Star Rally?
The rally’s parking page and FAQ are clear on the rules:
- Official rally parking areas are for bikes, trikes and Can-Am three-wheelers.
- A parking pass is required to park on or enter the Strand.
- Online pass sales are closed. Passes can still be bought in person at the official lots during the event, while supplies last.
- The pass lets you move your bike in and out of any official location as often as you like.
- The multi-level garages that allow car parking are not official rally lots, and rally passes do not work there.
- A trolley runs between the Strand and the Seawall on 25th Street.
- ATVs, UTVs and golf carts are not allowed on the Strand.
The organisers also list free parking for Slingshots and bikes only at the Pleasure Pier lot, and a parking spot across from Starbucks at 22nd and Harborside Drive for riders with disabilities. The rally’s own pages give different closing dates for online sales, so do not rely on buying a pass at the last minute. Call the number on the parking page if you are unsure.
What is the weather like in Galveston in early November?
Mild, on average. These are the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston 1991 to 2020 normals for Galveston on the rally days, from its November normals:
Two things help read the chart. Normal rainfall so far this month builds from 0.78 inches on 5 November to 1.25 inches on 8 November, which works out to roughly 0.15 inches a day across the four days. And the same National Weather Service record shows lows as cold as 35°F for 7 November (set in 1959), so an average is not a promise. The NWS page notes it stopped updating after 2022, and the month’s normal total is 4.28 inches.
The normals are a climate average, not a forecast. The card at the top of this page shows a live model forecast for the four rally days and refreshes when the page opens; check the National Weather Service forecast for Galveston in the days before you leave, and again on the morning you ride.
What the forecast says now
Read on 25 October, a public weather model puts every rally day close to the normal highs, at 73 to 75°F, and well above the normal lows: overnight temperatures of about 73°F against normals of 61 to 62°F. It shows no measurable rain in any hour from Thursday to Sunday, with a 6 to 23% chance on the daily figures, and southerly gusts of 15 to 19 mph.
Gulf winds on Seawall Boulevard and on the causeway will matter more than the temperature, so pack a wind-proof layer and rain gear you can reach without unpacking. A forecast eleven days out is a guide only, so treat these figures as the starting point and look again before you leave.
What rides can you do from Galveston?
The rally itself is a place you park and walk, so most riders plan rides around it rather than through it.
Out to Bolivar Peninsula. Take the ferry across and ride State Highway 87 along the peninsula. Wikipedia lists Port Bolivar, Crystal Beach, Caplen, Gilchrist and High Island as the peninsula’s communities. We have not ridden it for this post, so check the route and the ferry wait on a map before you commit a morning to it. If the queue is long, turn it into a short out-and-back from the Port Bolivar side instead.
Along Seawall Boulevard. The seawall runs for over 10 miles according to Wikipedia, and it is where the rally’s Progressive Stage sits. It will be busy with other bikes over the weekend, so a slow roll rather than a fast one.
Further afield. The Texas Hill Country is a long way from the coast, and we have not worked out distances for this post. Our guide to the best motorcycle roads in Texas covers the state’s best twisty roads, and the warm-state scenic drives guide is the place to look if you want to make a longer trip of it.
How do you ride to the Lone Star Rally as a group?
Most riders go to a rally with friends, and the hard part is rarely the destination. It is the morning of: five bikes, two fuel stops, one ferry queue, and a rider who gets separated at a light on Interstate 45.
What MotoRidez does, based on what is live in the app today:
- Plan the route and send it as one link. You can send a trip as a single link so everyone has the same route and stops loaded before the morning of the ride.
- Run it as a group. Groups have an invite link, and group rides can collect RSVPs and set a shared meeting point, so the plan for where and when you leave is in one place.
- Share live position. A rider can share their live position with a link, and can turn that link off at any time.
None of that replaces the basics in our guide to planning a group motorcycle ride: agree the pace, name a sweeper, mark corners, and agree what to do if the group splits. It also does not tell you the ferry wait or the state of Interstate 45. Use TxDOT’s wait-time page for that and decide a fallback before you leave.
One practical suggestion for a rally trip: pick a meeting point on the mainland side, away from the island’s traffic, and treat the Galveston end as “everyone arrives separately and meets at the bikes”. It is far easier to keep a group together on the way in than to find it again inside a crowd.
A short checklist for the week before
- Confirm the dates and the band lineup on the official Lone Star Rally site.
- Decide the route in: Interstate 45 and the causeway, or the Bolivar ferry, and what the fallback is.
- Buy the rally parking pass in person at an official lot, or plan where else you will park.
- Check the National Weather Service forecast for Galveston two days out and the morning you leave.
- Send the route and the meeting point to the whole group, and agree what happens if someone is separated.
- Fill up before the island. Plan fuel on the mainland side rather than relying on a short queue on rally weekend.
If you ride to Galveston this year, the two things worth confirming the night before are the ferry wait on TxDOT’s page and the forecast.
Rally details are from the Lone Star Rally website and TxDOT’s Galveston to Port Bolivar ferry page. Climate normals are from the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office (1991 to 2020). The forecast card is read from a public weather model on 25 October 2026 and refreshes when the page opens. Attendance is a third-party estimate. Any of it can change; nothing here replaces the official rally site, TxDOT or the National Weather Service.
