The twistiest stretch of State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound, through the Fiordland valleys toward the Homer Tunnel.

SeasonNovember to April

One of the great drives. The road runs up the Eglinton Valley, climbs toward the Divide and finishes with a steep descent through the Homer Tunnel, an unlined rock tunnel with a steep grade, into the Cleddau Valley.

There is no fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so fill up before you leave. Tour buses share the road all day.

It is avalanche country in winter and spring, and the road closes for slips and snow. Check the NZTA Waka Kotahi road report and carry chains when the season requires them.
