Longer, higher and far more demanding than the Black Spur, with almost none of the traffic. Most Melbourne riders who have done both put this one clearly ahead.
Blind crests, corners that tighten on you, damp patches under the trees and very little traffic to hide behind. It rewards accuracy rather than speed.
The surface varies from excellent to genuinely poor within a few kilometres, so it is a road to read rather than attack, and one that deserves real respect in the wet.
Go early. It gets much less pleasant once the day's traffic finds it.
