The twistiest stretch of State Highway 75 across Banks Peninsula, climbing to the Hilltop saddle and dropping to the harbour at Akaroa.

SeasonAny month; weekdays are quieter

Flat road out of Christchurch, then the peninsula starts: a climb to the Hilltop saddle with a view over Akaroa Harbour, and a winding descent to the village below.

It is a tourist route, so expect traffic, particularly on weekends and when cruise ships are in.

The descent is the best part and the part with the most oncoming vehicles. Keep to your side on the bends.
